Centre lacks impartiality in tackling Gujarat situation: Sonia

Congress party president Sonia Gandhi on Saturday hit out at Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee for taking along 'persons who were masterminding' the violence in Gujarat on his day-long visit on Thursday and accused the Centre of 'lacking impartiality' in tackling the situation there.

"Though prime minister visited Gujarat after more than a month of the Godhara carnage, he took along with him such persons under whose directions humanity was being butchered in the state," she said, while inaugurating a day-long All India Seva Dal's annual meeting in Delhi.

Without naming the Sangh Parivar, the leader of the opposition said that the same ideology was responsible for the 'pre-planned' violence in Gujarat, which was responsible for the assassination of Mahatma Gandhi.

Raising doubts about the BJP-led government's 'intentions' about tackling the situation in Gujarat where violence and killings continued, Gandhi said, "The viewpoint and intentions of those wielding power at the Centre are wrong and ambiguous as their only step was to cling to power."

"They have no contribution during the freedom struggle. Rather they worked for breaking the country as every fascist ideology does against the democratic system... they want power at all cost. This is their faith and religion," she said.
