I wanted to visit Gujarat earlier: PM

Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee on Thursday said he was advised against visiting Gujarat, due to the tense situation in the state.

"I wanted to come early, but was told that things were not okay. They said the added responsibility of arranging my security would hamper law and order work," he said during his visit to a relief camp for victims of the communal violence.

Vajpayee said he had come with a "broken heart" and what happened in Gujarat was shameful.
