Army steps up vigil along Indo-Pak border

Vice Chief of Army Staff Lieutenant General Vijay Oberoi said on Sunday that Indian army has taken 'all precautionary measures' along the border with Pakistan, amidst gaining imminence of a US action against Afghanistan.

Although not anticipating the possible conflict to spill over to India, Gen Oberoi said, "Whenever a situation develops in which we feel security concern, we take precautionary measures along the border."

"All such measures have been taken," he said.

Referring to the situation in the region, the Army Vice Chief said Afghanistan's Taleban regime is sustained by Pakistan and if flow of supplies was stopped it would be rendered powerless.

"Whatever Pakistan may say at diplomatic levels, the fact is it provides all kinds of supplies to Taleban, including weapons, oil and food," Gen Oberoi said.

He added that if these supplies were 'choked', the militia regime would receive a severe blow.

He said the problem, which India has been faced with for so many years was now being recognised throughout the world following the September 11 terrorist attacks in Washington and New York.

"Terrorism has now acquired a global complexion," he said.
