The Presidential notification dated September 7 was officially announced in Imphal on Tuesday.
"In exercise of the powers conferred by sub-clause (b) of clause (2) of article 174 of the Constitution, read with clause (a) of the proclamation number G.S.R. 410 (e), dated 2 June, 2001 issued under article 356 of the Constitution in relation to the state of Manipur, K R Narayanan, the President of India, hereby dissolves the legislative assembly of the state of Manipur with immediate effect," it said.
The state law secretary has also issued a notification in this regard, official sources said.
The assembly was placed under suspended animation and President's rule imposed in the state on June 2 following prolonged political instability after the downfall of Radhabinod Koijam's Samata Party government.
On September 4 the Union Cabinet had accepted the recommendation of Governor Ved Prakash Marwah to dissolve the state assembly and subsequently recommended the same to the President.
The Governor's recommendation was made under Article 174 (2b) of the Constitution, the sources said.
Parliament, in its recently concluded session, passed resolutions approving the step.
Union Home Minister L K Advani had earlier announced in Parliament that the state assembly would be dissolved and fresh elections held.
