G K Vasan, son of late G K Moopanar, was on Saturday unanimously elected as the Tamil Maanila Congress president.
A resolution to this effect was adopted at a meeting of party MPs, MLAs, district presidents and other office bearers held in Madras.
TMC legislative party leader S R Balasubramaniam told reporters that the decision would be conveyed to Vasan soon by a group of senior leaders.
Vasan, 37, was the unanimous choice, he said.
The election of Vasan comes two days after the death of Moopanar. A general council meeting of the party would soon meet to ratify Vasan's election.
The meeting also condoled the death of Moopanar.
