Pondicherry CM Shanmugham resigns

N Sathiyamoorthy in Madras

Pondicherry Chief Minister P Shanmugham submitted his resignation to Lt Governor Dr Rajni Rai on Friday morning.

This followed Congress high command's decision to replace him after he failed to get any of his party legislators to vacate their seat in his favour.

With the four-member Pudhucherry Makkal Congress headed by P Kanan crossing over from the National Democratic Alliance to the Congress-led ruling coalition, the latter now does not require the support of the All India Anna DMK and the Tamil Maanila Congress.

The Congress has now decided to go it alone in the forthcoming local bodies elections in Tamil Nadu.
