Chandrika dissolves parliament, polls in Dec

Sri Lankan President Chandrika Kumaratunga dissolved parliament on Wednesday night and announced fresh elections in December, a government spokesman said.

"Her Excellency dissolved Parliament. Fresh elections will be held on December 5 and a new Parliament will be constituted by January 1, 2002," Information Chief Ariya Rubasinghe said.

Kumaratunga's decision was not unexpected after a spate of desertions from her People's Alliance that left the government on the brink of imminent collapse in a vote of no-confidence scheduled for debate on Thursday.
