Post September 11, US detains 20 Indians

Twenty Indians are among 500 people detained in the United States following a crackdown by the Justice Department in the aftermath of the September 11 terrorist strikes, officials in Washington confirmed on Friday.

US Attorney General John Ashcroft had revealed on Thursday that the total number of Indians detained was 20.

Earlier, there were only two known cases involving immigrants from Hyderabad, the officials said.

The Indian embassy had said it was prepared to give all consular assistance in the cases.

"We are in touch with all of them," a senior embassy official said.

Most of the cases related to immigration offences, he said
