No clandestine probe into Tehelka: CBI

The Central Bureau of Investigation on Tuesday denied that the agency was conducting any 'clandestine and parallel probe' into the Tehelka tapes but clarified that Congress secretary Tom Vadakkan was contacted in connection with the alleged leakage of documents from the Union ministry of home affairs (MHA).

Official spokesman of the CBI S M Khan said Inspector G M Rathi had gone to Vadakkan's residence to verify certain facts that had come up during the investigations into the case under the Official Secrets Act registered against a section officer of the MHA Neeraj Kumar.

The CBI has also interrogated two Tehelka staffers Anirudh Bahl and Thomas Mathews besides Mathew Samuel, a suspended director of the MHA.

"As he (Vadakkan) was not present at his residence, the CBI sleuths contacted him on phone but the meeting has not taken place as yet," the spokesman said.

The Congress party had accused the Vajpayee government of using the CBI as 'an instrument of intimidation' and charged the investigating agency with 'personally targeting' the secretary of party's media department Tom Vadakkan in regard to the Tehelka affair.

"We suspect that the government is trying to create an elaborate diversionary ploy by using the dirty tricks department of CBI," party spokesman S Jaipal Reddy had told reporters in Delhi on Monday while registering the party's protest on the issue.
