Dalai Lama can't select reincarnate Buddhas: China

China has said the Dalai Lama does not have the power to select "reincarnate Buddhas" and that Beijing would not accept his choice.

Only the Chinese government enjoys the right to recognise reincarnate Buddhas, a practice dating back to the Qing dynasty, media reports said quoting Tubdun, a senior official in the Religions Committee of Tibet.

Tubdun acknowledged that the procedure of identifying reincarnate Buddhas is in line with the practice of Tibetan Buddhism, but rejected a role for the Dalai Lama in it, the official China Daily reported.

"According to the reincarnation system, the Dalai Lama has not been granted the right to pick the living Buddhas," he said.

"So his acts to locate them are totally against the tradition and thus those soul boys he names as reincarnations will never be confirmed by the Chinese government."

In 1995, China had rejected the Dalai Lama's choice of the 10th Panchen Lama and had appointed its own nominee.

Eight reincarnated soul boys have been found and recognised by the Chinese government since 1998 when the reincarnation system was resumed, Tubdun said.
