The cyclone threat to Goa and parts of the Karnataka coast receded as the cyclonic storm on Tuesday night veered northwards.
Meteorologists said the storm is now headed for the coastal regions of southern Maharashtra, between Devgad and Alibag, and is expected to hit the coast on Thursday if there is no further change in its movement.
According to S R Bajpai, director of the Indian Meteorological Observatory in Goa, the storm had veered northwards when it was still 300 kms away from the Goa coast.
The entire state administration was put on alert on Tuesday after being warned that winds moving at a speed of 80 to 100 kms per hour were headed in the direction of the coast along Karnataka, Goa and the Konkan (southern Maharashtra).
Authorities had set up round-the-clock control rooms at all the taluka mamlatdar offices as well as district collectorates, besides warning fishermen not to venture into the sea.
The administration had even published a detailed list of Dos and Don'ts for the public as a precautionary measure.
