Cyclone skips Maharashtra, Goa,
and heads for Gujarat

The severe cyclonic storm has changed its course, skipping Maharashtra and Goa, and was on Wednesday night heading towards Gujarat, which has been put on high alert.

The storm was positioned 550 km south of Veraval in Gujarat, the Indian Meteorological Department said in Pune.

It is expected to cross Gulf of Cambay and the south Gujarat coast between Veraval and Surat by May 25 evening, IMD director Dr A B Mazumdar said.

The cyclone is likely to move initially in a northernly direction and cross the Maharashtra coast between Devgarh and Alibag by Thursday noon, he said.

Gujarat Chief Minister Keshubhai Patel asked the army to be prepared to help in launch rescue and relief measures in the eventuality of a severe cyclonic storm hitting the coastal areas of the state in the next 48 hours.

Bhuj, Mundra, Mandvi, Abadasa and Lakhpat towns of Kutch district have been linked with satellite to know the momentum of the cyclone.

The Kandla Port Trust authorities have also taken the services of a website, introduced by Hawai University, for swift action to face any eventuality.
