Manipur BJP ready to stake claim
for government formation

Manipur Bharatiya Janata Party legislature party leader R K Dorendra Singh would call on Governor Ved Prakash Marwah on Tuesday and stake claim to form the government if the party's central leaders agreed to the installation of a new BJP-led ministry in the state, party sources in Imphal said.

Dorendra Singh would submit a list of 40 legislators to Governor Ved Prakash Marwah after hearing from the central leaders, the sources said.

Manipur BJP leaders would put 'maximum pressure' on central leaders to install a BJP-led government in the state, despite the decision of the National Democratic Alliance Coordination Committee debarring the party legislators from being contenders for the chief minister's post, the sources said.

They pointed out that BJP with 26 legislators was the single largest party in the 60-member House.

The decision debarring BJP MLAs from chief ministership by NDA was taken on Monday in a meeting at the prime minister's residence after the fall of the Samata Party-led People's Front ministry, the sources said.

A joint meeting of the state BJP and its partners - Manipur State Congress Party (Chaoba), Nationalist Congress Party (NCP), Federal Party of Manipur and Janata Dal (Loken) - which pulled down the Koijam ministry on Monday, was slated during the day to chalk out the future course of action, they said.

Dorendra Singh had earlier stated that a new front would be formed by the BJP, MSCP (Chaoba), NCP, FPM and JD (Loken).
