Taleban denies reports of
restrictions on Hindus

Afghanistan's ruling Taleban on Monday said there was no truth in reports of restrictions on Hindus in the country.

Expressing surprise over reports appearing in a section of the Indian media, he said he was not aware of any decree being passed by the Taleban regime against Hindus.

He said neither official reports nor news reports emanating from Kabul made any mention of such a decree. "I am surprised that such a report is in circulation in India."

The spokesman said a substantial number of Hindus and Sikhs lived in Afghanistan's Jalalabad town. A number of them fled to India due to the civil war before Taleban established its full control in 1996.

"A number of them later returned and settled back because they know that their religious and cultural interests will be protected," he said.
