Fernandes to boycott crucial NDA meet

Tara Shankar Sahay in New Delhi

Samata Party leader Jaya Jaitly asserted that senior party colleague George Fernandes will not attend the National Democratic Alliance co-ordination committee meeting at Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee's 7, Race Course Road residence on Monday evening.

Fernandes is the convenor of the NDA.

Jaitly was speaking to news persons before the Samata Party national executive meeting at the International Youth Hostel started at 1700 hours.

This development follows the defeat of the Samata Party government in Manipur, despite the Bharatiya Janata Party issuing a whip to its party legislators to vote in favour of the Radha Binod Koijam government.

Samata Party spokesman Sambhu Srivastava said Fernandes would be busy around that time attending his party's national executive meeting convened to reconsider the party's participation in the NDA government.

The Samata Party is angry over the ''betrayal'' by the BJP in Manipur, where the government was defeated on the floor of the state assembly, Srivastava added.
