Vikas Yadav sent to judicial
custody in Jessica murder case

A New Delhi court Thursday sent former Rajya Sabha member D P Yadav's son Vikas Yadav, an accused in the ramp model Jessica Lal murder case, to judicial custody, following expiry of the period of his interim bail.

Vikas is facing trial for alleged destruction of evidence in the case, in which former Union minister Vinod Sharma's son Manu Sharma is accused of killing the model in a south Delhi restaurant on the night of April 30, 1999.

Additional Sessions Judge H R Malhotra sent Vikas to judicial custody after the prosecution moved an application before him saying the interim bail granted to the accused by a sessions court in September 1999 had expired and he did not seek any fresh bail from the court.

In September 1999, a sessions court had granted him interim bail with the direction that the accused had to surrender before the trial court a week before beginning of the trial and seek fresh bail.

In fact, Vikas had filed an application before Additional Sessions Judge S M Chopra, from whose court the case was transferred to that of Malhotra, for confirmation of the earlier bail order a week before recording of evidence was scheduled to begin, but that application had not been decided.

The court, while ordering to hear on Friday the bail application, which has been pending, agreed with prosecutor S K Saxena's contention that the accused should be taken into custody.
