The Assembly Elections 2001: Tamil Nadu

DMK chief concedes defeat

Tamil Nadu Chief Minister and DMK President M Karunanidhi Sunday announced the resignation of his ministry following the ruling party's defeat in the assembly elections in the state.

He said the resignation letter would be handed over to Governor Fathima Beevi by his secretary.

On whether he would resign his membership as he did after winning from Harbour in the 1991 elections, when the party was routed, Karunanidhi said he would accept the decision taken by the party in this regard.

On the DMK's course of action, he said, ''We will discuss it.''

"False propaganda that the DMK is responsible for the rejection of AIADMK supremo J Jayalalitha's nominations has won," Karunanidhi said in a statement.

Conceding defeat, he said the false propaganda had won despite Chief Election Commissioner M S Gill stating that the rejection was done as per law.

"I take the results as the reward of the people of the state for our achievements," he added.
