The Assembly Elections 2001: Assam

Congress wins first three Assam seats

Himanta Biswa Sarma (Congress) won the Jalukbari assembly seat in Assam defeating his nearest Nationalist Congress Party rival and sitting MLA Bhrigu Kumar Phukan by 1,200 votes.

Pankaj Bora (Congress) won the Guwahati East assembly seat defeating his nearest Asom Gana Parishad rival and Municipal Administration Minister Biraj Kumar Sarma by 12,224 votes.

Hemanta Talukdar (Congress) won the Guwahati West Assam assembly seat defeating his nearest AGP rival and Sericulture Minister Ramendra Narayan Kalita by 5,500 votes.
