R K Narayan conscious but still critical

Shobha Warrier in Madras

Well-known writer R K Narayan, who was admitted to Devaki Hospital in Madras following intestinal bleeding on Wednesday, improved slightly on Thursday.

Doctors said the writer is still in the Intensive Care Unit of the hospital and under constant observation.

Doctors said intestinal bleeding had led to multi-organ failure and he is now connected to life-support system.

It was N Ram, the editor of Frontline and a very good friend of Narayan, who attended the phone at the ICU when this correspondent called.

"He is conscious now and we are communicating with him. Though he cannot talk to us because of the tube, he communicates with us. Yes, he has improved but not to the level that we can say he is out of danger," Ram said.
