Congress set to sweep
Kerala, says exit poll

An exit poll conducted for television networks in five states on Thursday predicted that the Congress led United Democratic Front is set for a sweep in Kerala, while the Congress will be close to a majority in a hung assembly in Assam.

The Left Front in West Bengal and the AIADMK front in Tamil Nadu are projected to get a simple majority in a close contest, said the exit poll conducted by the Development and Research Services (DRS) for Doordarshan and Zee TV.

With a 48 per cent vote share, the UDF appeared headed for a two-thirds majority in the 140-member House, with 100 seats, while the ruling Left Democratic Front would finish with 37 seats at a 42 per cent vote share. "Other" parties with a vote share of nine per cent would get three seats.

In Assam, the opposition Congress with a 42 per cent vote share is poised to get 60 seats in the 126-member House followed by the AGP-Bharatiya Janata Party combine with 33 seats with a share of 31 per cent. "Other" parties are likely to get 32 seats with a vote share of 27 per cent. Polling in Dibrugarh constituency has been countermanded.

The exit poll in West Bengal showed an identical vote share of 44 per cent for both major fronts, with the ruling Left Front winning a slender majority of 150 seats and the opposition Trinamul Congress-Congress combine trailing closely at 138 seats in the 294-member assembly. "Others" would get just about six seats with a vote share of 12 per cent.

Similarly, Tamil Nadu is also poised for a keen finish with the ruling DMK-led front and the AIADMK-led front polling 47 and 48 per cent votes respectively with the AIADMK front getting a simple majority of 125 seats in the 234-member assembly.

The DMK front is likely to get 105 seats, with the "others" getting four seats with a five per cent vote share.

For the 30-member Pondicherry assembly, the poll did not predict any seat outcome but the vote share. The DMK-led front is expected to get 40 per cent, the TMC-Congress 28 per cent and AIADMK-led front polling 25 per cent votes. "Others" would get seven seats.

The exit poll was conducted in 127 constituencies across the five states with a margin of three per cent error. The survey covered 20 constituencies in Kerala and Assam but the break-up was not given for other states.
