Less than 24 hours after India invited Bangladesh to official-level talks to address the boundary issue, Foreign Minister Abdus Samad Azad said the joint working groups set up by the two countries would begin working soon and suggested early implementation of the Indira-Mujib Accord of 1974 to help defuse tension.
Conveying his views to India's High Commissioner in Bangladesh Monilal Tripathy at a meeting in Dhaka, Azad said, "It is very necessary to expedite the implementation of the Indira-Mujib Accord for speedy resolution of the border problem and to avoid unwarranted situations."
On his part, Tripathy told Azad that India had the goodwill to solve the issues of border demarcation, exchange of enclaves and "adverse possession of land" in the light of the accord, an official release issued after the meeting said.
Azad said the JWGs would begin work soon to resolve the border dispute and the problems arising out of that. They would provide necessary directives to maintain peace at the border, he added.
Bangladesh Foreign Secretary Syed Muazzem Ali had said on Monday that the process was underway to decide on the persons to represent Dhaka in the JWGs.
