Suspected ULFA militants
kill BJP candidate

Suspected United Liberation Front of Asom militants on Tuesday night shot dead the Bharatiya Janata Party candidate from Dibrugarh constituency, Jayanta Dutta, in Dibrugarh town.

Dutta and Asom Gana Parishad's Dibrugarh district secretary Prasanta Gogoi and another worker Biren Phukan were fired at inside a makeshift election office in the new market area of the town, police said.

Dutta was hit in his shoulder and died before he could be rushed to a hospital.

Tuesday's attack came close on the heels of an attempt on the life of AGP candidate from Barpeta constituency Kumar Dipak Das on Sunday.
