Union Home Ministry official
Thomas Mathew suspended

Thomas Mathew, a director in the Union Home Ministry, who is under investigation for his alleged involvement in the Tehelka expose, has been suspended.

Mathew, against whom the ministry has issued a showcause notice listing charges, including leakage of classified information and violation of official conduct rules, was placed under suspension on Monday, a spokesman of the ministry said on Tuesday.

The government felt that Mathew, despite being a government servant, "actively participated in political activities and associated himself with the activities of political parties and organisations having political undertones/overtones," the spokesman had said on Monday.

According to him, Mathew, a Central Secretariat Service officer, "is also reported to have entered into several transactions of immovable and movable property without prior or subsequent intimation to the Government as required under the conduct rules".

An inquiry against Mathew was ordered on March 22 in the wake of a Delhi newspaper report alleging that a conspiracy to carry out the expose was hatched in his office.
