At least nine people, including four Border Security Force soldiers, were killed and 16 others injured when outlawed National Liberation Front of Tripura guerrillas attacked them at Marachara in north Tripura on Wednesday.
Police and BSF sources said the toll might go up.
NLFT guerrillas attacked the BSF soldiers, who were escorting workers and labourers of the General Reserve Engineering Force from Kalatila border outpost to Reang Basti border outpost, killing four soldiers and five GREF workers and labourers on the spot.
The 16 injured, including some BSF jawans, were admitted to a nearby hospital.
Additional security forces, led by senior officials, have reached the spot and launched a combing operation.
This is the second major attack by the militants in 18 days on the security forces. On March 3, they had gunned down 11 Central Reserve Police Force soldiers and their two civilian drivers at Bampur in south Tripura district.
