Mild quake hits Koyna region

An earthquake measuring 3.7 on the Richter Scale hit Maharashtra's Koyna region on Monday night, about 140 km from Pune, Indian Meteorological Department sources said.

The slight intensity quake occurred at 22:09 hours IST at 17.3 degree north latitude and 73.8 degree east longitude.

Koyna hydro-electric project chief engineer Srikant Huddar said there has been no report of an effect on the accelerograph in the Koyna dam.

The accelerograph is used to measure the rate of change of velocity in the dam due to quakes. The acceleration recorded by the accelerograph is an important parameter in the safety of the dam.

The Koyna dam is situated in one of the most active seismic zones of Maharashtra and in 35 years this region has witnessed more than one lakh tremors.
