Shankaracharya of Dwarkapeeth, Swami Swarupanand Saraswati has urged the Bharatiya Janata Party-led National Democratic Alliance Government at the Centre to resign over the defence scandal.
He said that the government led by Atal Bihari Vajpayee should resign in the wake of disclosures by tehelka.com, owning moral responsibility, and stressed that those found guilty should be convicted for treason.
"Stern action should be initiated against those involved in 'deshdrohi'," he said.
Swami Swarupanand Saraswati is the first shankaracharya in the country to demand the resignation of the government over this scandal.
"There should be no compromise with national security and the resignation of George Fernandes as Union defence minister is not enough to cover up the irregularities," he said, with reference to the NDA stand that the minister had resigned on moral grounds.
Shankaracharya Swarupanand Saraswati said that the concept of politics had changed from serving people to acquiring wealth and augmenting personal interest.
