Bamiyan Buddhas blown up with dynamite

Afghanistan's ruling Taleban have completely destroyed the two giant Bamiyan Buddha statues, the BBC quoting independent reports said.

The Taleban's foreign minister, Wakil Ahmed Muttawakil, confirmed this at a meeting with UN Secretary-General Kofi Annan in the Pakistani capital Islamabad, the BBC said.

They were blown up by dynamite on Thursday.

An Afghan website, payamemujahid.com also confirmed that the statues were destroyed on March 8.

The website said a team of top 15 Taleban officials arrived at the site on Thursday morning and started digging holes into the statues. The holes were filled with dynamite and exploded at 1.15 local time. The two statues demolished were completely destroyed by the explosions.
