At least 13 persons, including 11 Central Reserve Police Force personnel, were killed in an ambush by the banned separatist National Liberation Front of Tripura in South Tripura district on Saturday morning.
Police in the state capital Agartala said terrorists perched atop a hill sprayed bullets on the jawans, who were on patrol duty in an extremist-dominated area of Bampur in South Tripura.
All the 12 victims were killed on the spot. The terrorists may also have decamped with the arms and ammunition of the slain CRPF personnel.
The incident occurred at about 0830 IST. Senior police and CRPF officers rushed to the spot, about 90km from Agartala, with reinforcements.
Sources said two CRPF jawans were also critically injured in the attack and shifted to the G B hospital in Agartala.
Meanwhile, security forces recovered five bodies from two separate places in south Tripura, while two persons were killed in an encounter between the NLFT and the All-Tripura Tiger Force at Sidhai in West Tripura on Friday.
The bodies of the five hostages were recovered following the confessional statements of two arrested terrorists. The victims were kidnapped last year by them and had been killed in captivity recently.
Saturday's attack on the CRPF was the third terrorist attack on the security forces in the last one year. Earlier, on March 24 last year, five Border Security Force jawans were killed at Siddhicharra in Dhalai district, while on April 17, three Tripura State Rifles jawans were gunned down by ultras at Sonacharra in West Tripura.
The CRPF is the largest paramilitary force engaged in anti-insurgency operations in the state. Fifteen battalions of the force are deployed in the state.
Saturday's incident was the biggest attack on the CRPF in Tripura.
