Crew members of MI-8
helicopter feared dead

The six crew members of the MI-8 Indian Air Force helicopter, which went missing on February 26 during a routine sortie in the interiors of lower Subansiri district of Arunachal Pradesh, are feared dead, official sources said in Itanagar on Thursday.

The sources said the copter's wreckage was spotted by villagers on Thursday at a narrow ridge, about seven km from Ziro, the headquarters of the lower Subansiri district.

Senior officials from Ziro have gone to the wreckage site, in the jungles, having no proper road communication.

The crew members were pilots Sq Ldr A Raju and Sq Ldr Panwar, an engineer and three gunners.

The chopper, which took off from Ziro to Tali, an interior place in the district, at 1445 hours dropped about 2.5 tonnes of ration and returned to its base at about 1515 hours. Soon it lost link with the base. Tali is about 15 km from the international border.

Aerial and ground search operations are on.

The Central Reserve Police Force, local police and villagers are also engaged in the operation, sources in Ziro said.

Officials say that the chopper might have crashed in the jungles due to poor visibility.
