Police restrain Sun TV

Sun TV - owned by Kalanidhi Maran, son of DMK leader and former chief minister Muthuvel Karunanidhi's nephew and Union Minister Murasoli Maran - has stopped transmission of people's reaction to Saturday's developments.

All of Saturday morning, Sun TV had been flashing images of Karunanidhi and Maran being manhandled by police personnel.

The television channel had also been flashing telephone numbers for the citizens to call and register their protest.

The channel was flooded with phone calls from angry citizens, some of whom have called for violent retaliation.

The studio anchor has on such occasions meticulously pointed out that such threats are unconstitutional, and has counselled the callers to refrain from taking the law into their own hands.

Following this, police entered the office of Sun TV in Madras with a view to shutting down transmission.

Police officials said that such calls were tantamount to an incitement to violence and have demanded that the channel close down its transmission.

The channel then stopped regular broadcast and began screening old black and white Tamil movies with the news of Karunanidhi's arrest and other developments being flashed as runners on the screen.
