Ghimire release on bail

K G Suresh in Kathmandu

Yubraj Ghimire, editor of the mass-circulated Nepalese daily Kantipur, and two others arrested last week on sedition charges, were Friday released on bail by a special court.

A three-judge bench, presided over by Justice Mohan Prakash Sitaula, released Ghimire, managing director of the publication Kailash Sirohiya and its director Binod Raj Gyawali after a day-long hearing.

The court asked Ghimire to deposit Rs 2000 as security.

The three were arrested last Wednesday following publication of an article in Kantipur by underground Maoist leader Baburam Bhattarai, alleging a nexus between India's external intelligence agency, the Research and Analysis Wing, the American Central Intelligence Agency and the palace, behind the June 1 massacre of the royals.

Bhattarai and publication chairman Hemraj Gyawali were declared absconders by the court, as they failed to appear before it.

Emerging from the court, Ghimire told reporters, "It is just the beginning of a legal battle. The court has rejected the government's plea for our custody."

The police had filed a chargesheet, accusing them of indulging in anti-state activities, including causing disaffection and hatred against new King Gyanendra and spreading ill-feeling against friendly countries like India.
