Nepali newspaper editor held

Josy Joseph in Kathmandu

Yubaraj Ghimire, editor of Kantipur, the largest selling Nepali newspaper, has been arrested for publishing an article by Maoist leader Baburam Bhattarai.

The police arrested Ghimire along with the publisher and managing director of Kantipur.

Ghimire told rediff.com over his mobile telephone, when he was in police custody, that he was not sure what charges were being framed against the three.

Apparently, he said the arrest was for publishing Bhattarai's article. There is a police look-out notice against Bhattarai, who is leading a Maoist movement that is carrying out a 'people's war' in Nepal's country side.

So far, 1,000 people have died in Maoist operations in the last three years.

Earlier in the day, speaking to a group of Indian journalists, Indian Ambassador to Nepal, Deb Mukherjee, had expressed displeasure over Bhattarai's article, which blamed India and the United States of America with conspiring to eliminate King Birendra.

Ghimire is a Nepali who has held several posts in Indian publications, including India Today, Outlook and Indian Express. He also used to be the BBC correspondent for its Nepali service.
