High alert along Indo-Nepal border

A high alert has been sounded along the Indo-Nepal border in Uttaranchal following the killing of Nepal's King Birendra, Queen Aishwarya and other members of the royal family, a senior police official said on Sunday.

"We have put our police personnel manning the Indo-Nepal border on high alert since Saturday following the killing of King Birendra," Uttaranchal Director General of Police (DGP) Ashok Kant Sharan said.

The situation along the border nevertheless remained normal, he added.

The Sikkim government also instructed the border outpost in West district bordering Nepal to remain alert in view of the developments in that country.

"We have instructed the border outpost at Chiyabhanjan to remain alert, though we do not foresee much problem in this sector following the tragic incident," District Collector S P Subba said.

The Chiyabhanjan border outpost, which requires 12 km trekking from the nearest checkpost at Uttarey and is located in a remote hilly terrain is manned by the Sikkim Armed Police, he said.

Sikkim has a 100-km mountainous boundary with Nepal. Due to the hilly terrain, thick forest and lack of proper roads, the possibility of trouble in this area following the regicide was much less, Subba said.

The state Inspector General (law and order) O H Subba said the absence of habitation in those areas lessened chances of any problem.
