Heptullah and other MPs concerned
about security

Josy Joseph in New Delhi

Rajya Sabha Deputy Chairperson Najma Heptuallah and several Members of Parliament expressed serious concern over the security situation in the Capital, and the security of Members of Parliament in general.

Heptullah said, "The security situation in Delhi is of serious concern. I will take it up with the concerned authorities."

She said she would take up the issue of the security of MPs with Rajya Sabha chairman Vice President Krishna Kant.

"I have reports before me of MPs being assaulted in other states also," she said outside Phoolan Devi's bloodstained 44, Ashoka Road residence where the 'Bandit Queen' was gunned down by three unidentified youth.

Heputallah said she would meet Union Home Minister L K Advani and discuss Delhi's worsening security scenario.

"The other day there was a daylight robbery of Rs two crores (Rs 20 million). There have been several such glaring incidents in the recent times," she said.

She said, the murder of Phoolan Devi 'was a grave security lapse'.

"If MPs are subjected to this, what will be the fate of the ordinary man?" she wondered.

Lok Sabha member and former Delhi chief minister Sahib Singh said the murder of a 'sitting MP is an embarrassment for the city police'.

He said, there is 'an immediate need to review the overall security scenario in the capital'.

He demanded that the MPS be given 'proper, foolproof security'.

Rashtriya Janata Dal's nominee in the Rajya Sabha Dharmaviriyo said the police failed to give proper security cover to Phoolan Devi though she was known to 'have several enemies in Kanpur and neighbouring areas'.

He said there is a 'need for an independent investigation into the real reason behind the murder'.
