BMC elections to be held on time

The Bombay state election commission on Monday refuted a report in some sections of the press claiming that the election of the Bombay Municipal Corporation had been deferred to June 2002.

The elections are supposed to be held in February next year.

Explaining the statutory position as provided in section 243 E of the Constitution, a spokesperson of the commission stated that the holding of elections to municipal corporations and councils is statutorily binding since there is no provision for deferring them.

The spokesperson further stated that elections are slated for 172 municipal councils in the state for December this year and for 29 municipal councils in January 2002.

Elections for nine municipal corporations -- Bombay, Thane, Ulhasnagar, Pune, Pimpri-Chinchwad, Nasik, Solapur, Amrawati and Nagpur -- will be held in February 2002.

Further, elections are due in the same month for 27 zilla parishads and 319 panchayat samitis and they will also be held as scheduled, he added.
