Govt grants special security to Karunanidhi, Maran, Baalu

Former Tamil Nadu chief minister and Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam chief M Karunanidhi has been provided special security cover by the Centre following reports of "heightened" threats to him, the Union home ministry said on Thursday.

While Karunanidhi, whose arrest recently created a big controversy, has been given 'Z' category security within Tamil Nadu, the two Union ministers, Murasoli Maran and T R Baalu, have been provided National Security Guards cover in the state, the ministry sources said.

Home Minister Lal Kishenchand Advani confirmed that special security had been provided to Karunanidhi and the two Union ministers.

The arrest of the two ministers along with the DMK chief had raised a major row, with the Centre issuing a warning to the Tamil Nadu government to take up measures to rectify "constitutional wrongs" and also take action against the erring policemen.

Karunanidhi had alleged that the arrest was a conspiracy to eliminate him and had discarded the security given to him by the state government on the ground that they were "silent spectators" during the arrest drama.
