Uttaranchal landslides: Copters airdrop food packets

Army helicopters on Wednesday began airdropping food packets and other essential items in Rudraprayag district, Uttaranchal, where 27 people were feared killed in heavy landslides on Monday, an official spokesman said.

Chief Minister Nityanand Swami made an aerial survey of the affected areas, he said.

State Disaster Management Minister Ajay Bhat, who visited the affected areas, said out of the 14 villages, Vyumgaad, Fata and Semkurla were the worst-hit.

The landslides triggered by heavy rains have completely cut off these villages from the outside, he said

The state government has appealed to the people of these areas to move to safer places and medical teams and make-shift tents have been sent as part of relief operations.
