NSC approves Musharraf's stand at Agra summit

K J M Varma in Islamabad

Pakistan's all-powerful military-dominated National Security Council and the federal cabinet on Wednesday backed the stand taken by President General Pervez Musharraf at the Indo-Pak summit.

An official statement said that the military ruler addressed a joint session of the federal cabinet and the NSC, which was attended by chief of the air staff, chief of the naval staff, deputy chief of the army staff and the four provincial governors, besides the federal ministers.

Musharraf briefed the meeting the reasons leading to the stalemate at the Agra summit. Officials said the two bodies approved the stand taken by Musharraf at the Agra summit adding that Musharraf would address a press conference on July 20, for which the Indian media would be invited.

He would also meet with politicians, Islamic clerics, leaders of Pakistan-based Kashmiri parties, editors of the Pakistan media, students and women groups to brief them about the outcome of his India visit.

Meanwhile, media reports in Islamabad said his popularity graph soared, especially after the telecast of his meeting with senior Indian editors during which he bluntly stressed the centrality of Kashmir in bilateral relations between India and Pakistan.
