20,000 protestors intensify Manipur sit-ins

About 20,000 people, including women and children, on Tuesday launched the biggest ever sit-in protest in Manipur at Imphal's Thangmeiband area against the Centre-National Socialist Council of Nagaland (I-M) ceasefire extension, official sources said.

The sources said the sit-in defying prohibitory orders began at 9 am (IST) and concluded at 4 pm (IST).

The protestors later formed a human chain in a symbolic protection of Manipur's boundary.

The sources said that the people later dispersed.

The sources said that large-scale sit-in protests and relay hunger strikes were also reported from various parts of Nagamapal and Khuyathong.

Meanwhile, thousands of vehicles including school vans, taxis and private carriers marched in a procession across Imphal, official sources said.

However, they were prevented from entering the hypersensitive zone at Puleiromba Khongnang Makhong, the sources said.

Army and paramilitary forces have also stepped up security measures and patrolling at all important points, they added.
