DMK to resume battle in Parliament

Tara Shankar Sahay in New Delhi

The ongoing battle of attrition between the Tamil Nadu government led by AIADMK leader J Jayalalithaa and the DMK is poised spill over to the impending monsoon session of Parliament commencing from July 23.

Union ministers Murasoli Maran and T R Baalu plan to move a privilege motion against the state police officials who allegedly tortured and beat them, a senior DMK party official said on Thursday.

"Both Maran and Baalu were subjected to acute humiliation, including being roughed-up by Tamil Nadu police officials. They have complained to Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee and Lok Sabha Speaker G M C Balayogi about the incident."

"The Speaker has asked the Tamil Nadu government for the relevant details," the official pointed out.

The DMK official said Maran had mentioned the names of TN police officials Christopher Nelson, Mohammed Ali and S George in his complaint lodged with the Speaker for their alleged 'high-handedness and gross misconduct, including using shocking abusive language'.

He said that once a parliamentary privilege motion was moved against 'these guilty officials', their career prospects, including promotional avenues, would reach a cul de sac.

The privilege motion was aimed at discouraging such 'obnoxious' behaviour on the part of police officials, in general, in the future, he added.

The stringent criticism of the policemen's conduct by constituents of the National Democratic Front (NDA) appears to have emboldened Maran and Baalu.

"All the NDA partners were categorical that the treatment meted out to the central ministers and DMK chief Karunanidhi by Tamil Nadu police officials amounted to serious human rights violations. If Chief Minister J Jayalalithaa thinks she can get away with it, she is sadly mistaken," Union Railway Minister and senior Samata Party leader Nitish Kumar said.

Kumar has been spearheading a campaign within the NDA, of which the DMK is a constituent, not only for the dismissal of the Tamil Nadu government but also taking stringent action against all the state officials involved in the humiliation of the trio of Karunanidhi, Maran and Baalu.

"Jayalalithaa had embarked on a vengeance-spree against the DMK from the day she was unjustifiably sworn-in as the Tamil Nadu chief minister. Everything is out in the open and television cameras don't lie. The Jayalalithaa government should be sacked by the Centre," Union Communications Minister Ram Vilas Paswan said.
