Defying curfew orders in Imphal and the three sensitive valley districts, angry Manipuri protestors took to the streets yet again on Wednesday.
Angry youths belonging to the Manipur Students Federation ransacked state Bharatiya Janata Party president Meisnam Bhorot's residence.
MSF volunteers have informed the press that "this move is the first of a series to push the BJP out of the state." The MSF has threatened to take similar action against party functionaries of other Central and regional parties in the state.
Meanwhile, women too have begun joining the protests in Imphal. Huge peaceful protests were held by women in Singjamei, Kongba Uchekon, Sangaiparou and Kwakeithel areas on Wednesday.
Their main demands include the release of the 12 AMSU activists arrested following the violent protests of last month and the revocation of the Naga ceasfire.
"Yes, we women have been protesting since Tuesday and today it has been more difficult because the police is obstructing us. All over Imphal it has been a women's only dharna. We are ordinary people, but if something hits our self-respect, no woman in Imphal will stay in-doors," Manorama Keisam, a doctor, said.
Meanwhile, the South Nagas Union of Nagaland's decision to welcome the ceasefire by hoisting white flags atop all Naga homes has added to the tension in Imphal.
Efforts are being made to prevent an ethnic flare-up in the state. "There is a very dangerous under-current running in Imphal. The police firing of June 18 combined with the arrest of the All Manipur Students Union leaders has alienated the Meitei youth," said an ex-MLA.
"Nobody wants an ethnic flare-up. Even Naga families have joined the protests to show their solidarity with the Meities. The need of the hour is a well-balanced decision on the Naga ceasefire from the Centre," he added.
On Tuesday, the Eramdum Manipur Mothers Association and the Naga Women's Union issued an appeal to the people of both Meitei and Naga communities to maintain calm.
