Tamil Nadu bandh passes off peacefully

N Sathiya Moorthy in Madras

The Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam-led National Democratic Alliance sponsored day-long bandh on Monday across Tamil Nadu passed off peacefully and was near-total across the state even as Chief Minister Jayalalitha, in a bold move, spent the day in neighbouring Kerala.

The bandh was called to protest the arrest of former chief minister M Karunanidhi and two Union ministers - Murasoli Maran and T R Baalu on Friday night.

Meanwhile, the chief minister spent the day in the Sri Krishna Temple at Guruvayur making a thanks-giving offering of an elephant to the famed deity.

Most shops, business establishments and educational institutions remained closed while near empty state transport buses plied with police escort.

Across the state, police arrested NDA cadres, including senior Bharatiya Janata Party leaders, who staged a bandh.

Most DMK men had already been picked up as a precautionary measure on Saturday morning following Karunanidhi's arrest.
