Gujarat CM announces new fund to streamline relief

A Correspondent in Ahmedabad

Gujarat Chief Minister Keshubhai Patel Wednesday announced the setting up of a Earthquake Rehabilitation and Reconstruction Fund to streamline assistance received from abroad.

Minutes before leaving on a visit to the worst-hit Kutch district, Patel said that a number of foreign governments, national and international financial agencies and voluntary agencies had started pouring in for reconstruction of Gujarat and added that such assistance would be co-ordinated.

The chief minister said that the World Bank had already announced Rs 13 billion loan in first phase, which would be received shortly.

Patel also said that the Gujarat government would submit a comprehensive project for disaster management to the World Bank.

The chief minister said that the state finance department would soon conduct various surveys to ascertain the damage.

At a high-level meeting of top officials, Patel said that Gujarat had already received Rs 850 million out of the total assistance of Rs 5 billion from the Union government.
