Several French rescue teams helping quake relief

In a bid to speed up the rescue operations in Bhuj, France has sent several rescue teams and has offered nearly one million French francs to the International Federation of the Red Cross for the earthquake victims of Gujarat.

The rescue team consists of doctors, helpers, sniffer dogs, medical supplies and other relief materials.

Dr Peter Fouillant, a medical coordinator, and a veteran in rescue work in earthquake-affected areas, has already arrived in Gujarat and is helping out in the relief work.

At present the French organisations helping out the earthquake victims are:

Groupe de Secours Catastrophes Francais: It comprises six rescue workers and a sniffer dog, with 700 kgs of material.

Two doctors make up the Doctors of the World organisation, with 300 kgs of material.

Association de Secouristes Maitres-Chiens de la Moselle consists of seven rescue workers and four sniffer dogs, with one ton in relief materials.

Telecom Without Borders comprises of three rescue workers, with 300 kgs of material.

Coordination de Secours International includes seven rescue workers and three sniffer dogs, with 700 kgs of material.

Five first-aid workers and three sniffer dogs from the International Search and Rescue Team.

The disaster sniffer dogs first-aid association consists of six workers and three sniffer dogs. Another team of three rescue workers and a sniffer dog will be coming on January 31.

Firemen Without Borders has five rescue workers.

Groupement Cynophile De Recherche et de Sauvetage has sent seven sniffer dogs.

Doctors Without Borders is another organisation which is involved in the rescue operations.

A 44-member team, including nine doctors and eight nurses, reached Ahmedabad by a French Air Force C-135 on January 28, with nine tons of material. This team is now working in Bhuj.
