Two navy ships converted into hospitals

Two of the four Indian naval ships, which arrived in Kandla with relief materials, have been converted into make-shift hospitals while the rest have left for Bombay with those seriously injured in the quake.

Union Home Minister L K Advani, who visited the two ship-cum- hospitals during his two-day visit to the worst-affected areas of Gujarat, told PTI that the Indian Navy "has lived up to its traditions once again" by providing much-needed relief to the quake victims.

While the dormitories of the two ships, INS Yamuna and INS Nirdesh, have been converted into hospital wards, the air-conditioned areas have been turned into operation theatres.

Commodore S P Makar, naval officer in charge of Gujarat, said each ship can treat 100 patients.

He said about 50 patients were treated in the two other ships, which arrived in Kandla earlier.

Among the patients who were being treated now, a seven-year old boy, Kalbir, who has a serious fracture on his leg as a wall collapsed on his foot, was provided medical attention and blood transfusion, his father said while complimenting the navy for timely help.
