Dubai Indians raise Rs 11.2 million for quake victims

Expatriate Indians in Dubai collected one million dirhams (Rs 11.2 million) at a fundraiser Tuesday night for victims of the devastating Gujarat quake.

"We have received generous commitments from NRI businessmen and business houses and I am hopeful of raising five million dirhams (Rs 60 million) from Dubai for the quake victims," organiser of the fundraiser Bharatbhai Shah said.

"We will send 2,000 tents and commodities like gloves, sugar, tea, water and edible oil," Shah said, adding a ship with a capacity of 600 tons has also been arranged for carrying relief, while another left for Mandvi Tuesday.

Nearly 200 tons of goods have already been collected by expatriate Indians in Dubai and the relief committee has organised a blood donation drive on Friday at a local hospital to raise money for the quake-hit.

Besides, 275,000 dirhams (Rs 3 million) have also been collected of which an Arab national had donated dh 16,000 (Rs 200,000).
