Anita returns the favour

Fate was kind to her. Now, she is determined to give back.

Anita, a nurse in the G K Civil Hospital in Bhuj, which collapsed like a pack of cards, is working round-the-clock treating patients at a makeshift hospital at the Silver Jubilee ground.

"It was a providential escape for me. As I came out after doing my night shift on January 26, the hospital building collapsed in front of my eyes.

"Since God has given me another life it is my endeavour to reach out to people by administering medical aid to them."

In neighbouring Anjar town, 45-year-old Mohammedbhai is searching for his 16-year-old son Luna. "It is not possible to trace my son among hundreds of those buried... if I am able to trace his vehicle it will be easier for me to find him."

Mohammedbhai's son had gone to fetch vegetables on the fateful day.

On the outskirts of Bhachau, which has been flattened, 50-year-old Sapnaben is preparing chapatis even as mass funeral pyres are being lit nearby.

Vondh, probably the largest milk-producing village of the region, has a problem of surplus milk production. With half its 8,000 population affected by the calamity and without any means to transport milk outside, the villagers are offering milk to visiting journalists and relief workers.
