Name:Siri Kripya
Email:siri_kripya@rediffmail.com
Condolence Message:Deep condolences and best wishes for strength and energy for all the victims and their dear ones. But the sad part would be if, we(INDIA) do not improve your crisis management infrastructure, from this tragic experience and live again at the mercy of nature. It is a hopeless situation, that our greed has become so much that, it seems almost uncleanable from corruption etc., Sometimes wonder, How many such tragedies should happen for most humans to appreciate the value of life. And as a whole appreciate humanity, than materialism. Lets try bit harder, to be more kinder and help in each best way we can. Next time we get a chance lets build trust, and avoid breaking it. Trust is an important thing, which can rebuild families, communities, societies, countries, humanity -Siri

Name:Parvin Syal M.D.
Email:parvinsyal@earthlink.net
Condolence Message:My family and I survived the 1994 Northridge Earthquake in California. The 45 seconds long, earthquake was hell. The longest minute of our lives. Staying the following night outdoors is seared in memory as well. And this in a country where all facilities became available expeditiously. Unfortunately, the situation in Gujarat is not so utopian, and I can imagine the level of suffering. The dead are gone. Peace to their souls. The LIVING are the ones who need our prayers, Best wishes and material help. We as an NRI community have already started efforts to help materially. Our prayer is that Indian Bureaucracy and corruption will not swallow up a bulk of the funds raised. These are practical problems which just can not be ignored, even as we mourn the tremendous loss of life. Our hearts and thoughts are with India, Gujrat and the individual cells suffering at the moment. God Bless and OM SHANTI.

Condolence Message:May God give the victims the strength and the resources to recover as soon as possible. For those of us living in the US and wanting to contribute to this cause, please check with your respective Indian Associations / representatives in the company before doing so. I know for a fact that in companies like AT&T, Oracle, Microsoft (just to name a few) where the company matches the employee's contribution $ for $. If this is the case in your company, then you can effectively double the contribution that reaches the victims.

Tue Jan 30 23:21:59 2001
Name:Sreejan Nair, London
Email:sreejan_nair@yahoo.com
Condolence Message:Never imagined this would happen to a beautiful state where new year and makar shankranti was just celebrated and now turning this state into total calamity. I was there in Baroda, my home town just a fortnight before...hard to believe it. The UK resue team was waiting for confirmation from Indian Government (repeatedly shown in BBC news). They left 2 days later...why is this delay...the same case for the Japanese Red cross team...why this visa delays ? The same situation happened last year to the British resue team who got calls from Russian submerged submarine only after 5 days. My suggestion is there is no harm in seeking help from helping nations and not waste time reviewing about it. I would suggest that Indian Government should have a separate battalion of Natural Disaster Task force of their own ready as cyclone, floods and earthquakes are becoming a regular feature. They should have all the search equipments, sniffer dogs and help aid(blankets, batteries, tents etc) at immediate disposal so as not to waste precious time. Hope God give the people the strength to overcome the grief.

Name:Praveen Gulabrani
Email:pgulab@hotmail.com
Condolence Message:Sitting here in the US, we are looking at the horrifying pictures coming in from Gujrat, and are helpless, angry, frustrated and sad at the same time. The events as they unfold make us wonder about the government ability to manage when such crisis occur. I am sure with little bit of upfront planning, and even central management right after the quake, we could have saved thousands of lives. Now the govt wants special taxes for restoration of Gujrat. NO INDIAN will hesitate to do that, but at the same time can we trust our govt with properly utilising our tax money. I am afraid the answer is NO. Like all things in India, we live Ram Bharosey, and only GOD can show some mercy on the unfortunate people of GUJRAT. My heart bleeds with pain for each and every Indian who lay down under the debris, waiting for some help. I am and will continue to pray for all the victims. -praveen and meeta gulabrani

Condolence Message:The destruction in Gujrat is unbelievable. Over 1 lakh people are feared dead and lakhs of people are injured. What remains to be done now is to help those people who are alive to brave through their present and live for their future. I know it is amazingly simple to write and talk about putting behind a disaster of this magnitude. Hats off to the people who are struggling as one to snatch precious lives from the hands of death. Bless you all...not only those who have been struck by disaster or the people working to clear the debris...but all of you who have bothered to spare a thought. That by itself is a step in the right direction. Lets hope that hope survives and the human race once again manages to emerge united in the face of such a calamity.

Name:kanchan
Email:kanchanmahesh@hotmail.com
Condolence Message:I had written a poem to express my thoughts at this time and I am submitting it here. The Catastrophe Calm prevailed after the catastrophe As destiny lay in dust Crowds awe-struck and in chaos Watch the dance of death Children cry in hunger and thirst As parents lay helpless with no limbs or life Coffins of dust are made in minutes As nature becomes furious with all her might Yet the sunrays shimmer through the cloud of dust An orphan finds her dead friend's parent They discover some hope in each other To live life again together Life plays its cruel games once a while That makes us lose our smiles Its only when we extend our arms Life finds another happy charm We who live so far away Can do nothing but wait and pray Hope that one arm begets another and sorrow is washed away for ever and ever!

Tue Jan 30 23:43:32 2001
Name:tilu
Email:alijii@yahoo.com
Condolence Message:I cant describe how sad I am about this tragedy. With tears in my eyes, ONLY WE INDIANS and the INDIAN GOVERNMENT is responsible for so much LOSS of LIFE. Had we spent even a small fraction of the current FINANCIAL LOSSES in Disaster Related Research( Earthquake Engineering, Wind Engineering etc) and had made safe houses with strict infracture codes this tragedy would never occur. United States(California) encounters more severe Earthquakes every now and then, more severe than the KILLER earthquake in Gujarat. This one was 7.9 on the Richter but California experiences Earthquakes as high as 8.9 or so. But the loss of lives is not more than 10 or 15 people or none at all and property loss is ignorable. India does not need Computers, we dont need Missiles, we dont need Nuclear Weapons. First and the foremost responsibility of the People of India and its GOVERNMENT should be to provide sufficient food/water, clean air to breathe and safe places to live and safe means of transportation. This is what USA and the rest of the so called developed world did before they ventured into the so called high tech stuff. Its shame on Indians and their Government. Thats all i Can say. Hope Indians Learn from this tragedy. India is always REACTIVE. We should be proactive and preventive rather than scratching our heads after a tragedy like this. We need be prepared for a DISASTER. anytime anywhere.
