No compromise on Kashmir: Musharraf

Pakistan's military ruler General Pervez Musharraf said his government would not compromise on the Kashmir issue even as it would strive for resolution of the dispute through a dialogue with India.

"There will be no compromise on Kashmir," he said addressing top brass of the Pakistan Air Force in Islamabad on Tuesday.

He added that, "We are for peace and would strive for it through talks with India."

"Pakistan is for peace. But its sovereignty, honour and dignity cannot be compromised," Musharraf was quoted by English daily The Nation as saying.

The newspaper report said the military ruler "informed" the PAF officers about the recent initiatives to have dialogue with India on the Kashmir issue.

He said Pakistan has to maintain minimum deterrence in view of the prevailing situation along the borders.

Musharraf told the officers that PAF would be given top priority among the three services once the economy improved, saying "There is no substitute for a strong air force in modern day warfare and we will not lower our guard in view of the enemy's preparedness."
