France, Italy rush aid to Gujarat

The French government has decided to make a contribution of one million French francs to the International Federation of Red Cross for earthquake relief work in Gujarat.

According to a press release issued by the consulate general of France, a French air force C135 aircraft has already reached Ahmedabad with a 44-member medical crew carrying 9 tonnes of material, including a field hospital and emergency food material.

Some French non-governmental organisations from 'Telecom Without Borders' and 'Firemen Without Borders' have also been despatched. The telecom team specialises in the management of emergency communication networks. Another NGO specialising in the search of missing people are already at work in Bhuj with seven sniffer dogs.

Italy too has extended an emergency aid of five billion Italian lire (approximately 2,500,000 US dollars) for the victims of the Gujarat earthquake, Italian Minister for Foreign Affairs Lamberto Dini has announced.

According to an official press release from the embassy of Italy, the minister will leave for Bhuj on Monday night 'to assess the situation, seek areas of intervention and create a liaison framework'. An aircraft from Italy, with generators, tents, blankets and water purifying equipment, is also expected within two days, the release further stated.

Italy has also channelled medicinal supply worth 300,000 US dollars through its embassy, the release further informed.
